چکیده

Given a set of objects O and a set of tests T , the abstract decision tree problem (DTP) is to construct a tree with minimum height that completely identi3es the objects of O, by using the tests of T . No algorithm with a good approximation ratio is known to solve this problem. We give a theoretical support for this fact by showing that DTP does not admit an o(log n)-approximation algorithm unless P = NP. c © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hardness and Inapproximability Results for Minimum Verification Set and Minimum Path Decision Tree Problems

Minimization of decision trees is a well studied problem. In this work, we introduce two new problems related to minimization of decision trees. The problems are called minimum verification set (MinVS) and minimum path decision tree (MinPathDT) problems. Decision tree problems ask the question “What is the unknown given object?”. MinVS problem on the other hand asks the question “Is the unknown...

A Metaheuristic Algorithm for the Minimum Routing Cost Spanning Tree Problem

The routing cost of a spanning tree in a weighted and connected graph is defined as the total length of paths between all pairs of vertices. The objective of the minimum routing cost spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree such that its routing cost is minimum. This is an NP-Hard problem that we present a GRASP with path-relinking metaheuristic algorithm for it. GRASP is a multi-start ...

Minimum vertex ranking spanning tree problem for chordal and proper interval graphs

A vertex k-ranking of a simple graph is a coloring of its vertices with k colors in such a way that each path connecting two vertices of the same color contains a vertex with a bigger color. Consider the minimum vertex ranking spanning tree (MVRST) problem where the goal is to find a spanning tree of a given graph G which has a vertex ranking using the minimal number of colors over vertex ranki...

Hardness of Online Sleeping Combinatorial Optimization Problems

We show that several online combinatorial optimization problems that admit efficient no-regret algorithms become computationally hard in the sleeping setting where a subset of actions becomes unavailable in each round. Specifically, we show that the sleeping versions of these problems are at least as hard as PAC learning DNF expressions, a long standing open problem. We show hardness for the sl...

Evaluation of liquefaction potential based on CPT results using C4.5 decision tree

The prediction of liquefaction potential of soil due to an earthquake is an essential task in Civil Engineering. The decision tree is a tree structure consisting of internal and terminal nodes which process the data to ultimately yield a classification. C4.5 is a known algorithm widely used to design decision trees. In this algorithm, a pruning process is carried out to solve the problem of the...
